Funding package to upgrade community buildings

Schools, community centres and care homes are among those set to benefit from a bumper £630 million funding package awarded by the government for energy upgrades for community buildings.

The package, which falls under the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, should contribute an estimated £650 million in savings for taxpayers, per year, on average over the next 12 years by allowing community buildings to switch to heat pumps, install solar panels, embrace insulation and double glazing.

The East of England has been awarded a package worth £29.1 million, with the majority of this going to the Medicines & Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency in Herfordshire (£10.9 million) and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (£8.9 million).

Bedford College Group, Cambridge City Council, Cambridgeshire County Council, East Suffolk Council, Essex County Council, North Hertfordshire Direct Council, North Norfolk District Council, The Diocese of Chelmsford Vine Schools Trust, Uttlesford District Council and West Suffolk Council have also been awarded grants.
