HYRO looks to move forward with green hydrogen project

HYRO has submitted a planning application for its Coleshill Green Hydrogen Project to Flintshire County Council.

The project is one of two set to be located on existing sites belonging to Kimberly-Clark – the parent company of Huggies, Andrex and Kleenex, among others. The purpose of the green hydrogen electrolyser production and storage facility will be to help energy intensive businesses through providing a reliable, cost-competitive source of power. The hydrogen produced will be used to fuel a hydrogen ready boiler located inside Kimberly-Clark’s Coleshill paper mill. Replacing the current boiler, powered by natural gas, the new one will produce the steam and heat necessary for the paper manufacturing process.

HYRO has already carried out pre-application consultations in April and May of this year. This gave specific statutory consultees alongside members of the public to see the proposals, ask questions and offer feedback. This feedback has then been taken into consideration before HYRO finalised the planning application.

Coleshill Green Hydrogen Development Project Manager, Iain Buchanan, said: “Green hydrogen projects are a critical component of the broader strategy to deliver energy security and create green economic growth across Wales and the UK. Green hydrogen can help to address the urgent need to decarbonise industrial businesses and hard to electrify sectors, setting them up with a cost competitive, clean fuel for the future.”
