The University of Sheffield has welcomed new equipment, which is set to enable it to produce more green hydrogen than any other UK research centre.
Courtesy of IMI VIVO, a new electrolyser has been installed at the University’s Sustainable Aviation Fuels Innovation Centre (SAF-IC). It means that it can now produce close to 140Nm3 of green hydrogen per hour and also has a storage capacity of 1,450Nm3. This is equivalent to the electricity required to power 200 homes.
The SAF-IC is the UK’s first R&D facility that is capable of developing, testing, validating and certifying new fuels in a lone location. Researchers from the University will now collaborate with partners in the aviation industry to develop new hydrogen and CO2-based fuels that meet the necessary standards.
They are also set to work with other industries across the UK, striving to help them switch fuels and decarbonise.
