SSE sees two green hydrogen projects get government backing

SSE has announced two of its projects have progressed to the final stage of the government’s Net Zero Hydrogen Fund.

In the final stage of the fund, which had been launched with the ambition of backing the development and deployment of new low carbon hydrogen production, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) will enter into negotiations with successful developers on how to provide support for the projects. This includes SSE’s Aldbrough Hydrogen Pathfinder and Gordonbush Hydrogen projects.

The Aldbrough Hydrogen Pathfinder is being developed at SSE Thermal’s existing gas storage site in East Yorkshire. The aim will be to show the interactions between renewable hydrogen production, storage and power generation. It could be operational by the middle of the decade and will showcase how flexible hydrogen will be important in the UK’s journey to net zero.

Gordonbush Hydrogen, meanwhile, will strive to produce and deliver green hydrogen through electrolysis, using renewable power gleaned from SSE Renewables’ 100MW Gordonbush onshore wind farm in Sutherland. This will seek to highlight the value of co-locating green hydrogen production at existing renewables sites.
