Norwich’s first zero emissions electric buses have taken to the streets.
Seven new electric double deckers operated by First Bus have now entered into service, forming what will be part of a 70-strong fleet rolled out over the coming months. The goal is to have all diesel buses that operate out of First Bus’ Roundtree Way depot replaced by March 2024, paving the way for over 60% of all bus journeys running through Castle Meadow in the city centre will be electric.
Norfolk County Council and First Bus secured £14.7mn from the Department of Transport’s Zero Emission Bus Regional Area (ZEBRA) funding scheme for the new buses, with First Bus topping it up with an additional £23mn in funding.
Managing Director of First East of England, Piers Marlow, said: “These vehicles offer significant environmental benefits, saving around 75 tonnes of CO2 per vehicle per year when compared to a diesel, and will improve the air quality for the city’s residents and visitors as they emit zero tailpipe emissions. Importantly, they will also improve the journey experience for our customers, and are fitted with all the modern features, offering a quieter and smoother ride, USB charging points, and good accessibility features.”
