Hydrogen supercluster in the works in South West and Wales

Academics from Bath, Exeter, the South West and Wales have been awarded £2.5mn in funding as they work to unlock the potential of the region’s hydrogen fuel ecosystem.

GW-SHIFT (Great Western Supercluster of Hydrogen Impact for Future Technologies) is set to be key to helping support the UK’s transition to green hydrogen production. It will enable cross-sector partnerships to drive the development of hydrogen skills, infrastructure and technology, backing innovative research and activities that can create a thriving low carbon hydrogen supercluster. It is set to focus on key themes, namely production, storage and distribution, conversion and transport.

Researchers from the University of Bath are leading the project, alongside fellow GW4 Alliance universities Exeter, Bristol and Cardiff. Others from Swansea, South Wales and Plymouth are also involved, while wider partners include the Western Gateway, Great South West, West of England Combined Authority, Hydrogen South West and SETsquared.
