Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) have been granted development consent for what will be the UK’s largest green electricity transmission reinforcement project.
Planning consents for all the onshore and offshore elements of the 525kV Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) project have now been granted by the three local planning authorities, as well as the Marine Management Organisation and Marine Scotland. These include a new converter station and landfall point at Sandford Bay in Peterhead, a landfall point at Fraisthorpe on the East Yorkshire Coast and a new converter station next to Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire.
A joint venture between SSEN Transmission and NGET, once complete, EGL2 will be the longest high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable in the UK and capable of powering more than 2mn homes with 2GW of capacity. Construction is set to commence in 2024, ahead of operations then being targeted to get underway from 2029.
