Green hydrogen project targets decarbonisation of road transport

Protium and partners have secured more than £30mn in funding to launch the Hydrogen Aggregated UK Logistics (HyHAUL) project.

Backed by the Department for Transport and Innovate UK, HyHAUL is set to see a rollout of 30 hydrogen fuel cell HGVs to haulage operators that are primarily operating along the M4 corridor by 2026. The ambition is to then deploy 300 by 2030, with the first-of-its-kind project targeting the heaviest, most polluting HGVs in the UK. With the haulage sector accounting for 19% of domestic transport emissions, rapid demonstrations of viable alternatives to diesel-fuelled vehicles are crucial to decarbonising the sector.

HyHAUL will provide vehicle original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and fleet operators with key operational data on the performance of the vehicles, helping to remove barriers to wider adoption across the industry. It will also see a network of refuelling stations deployed, ensuring viable truck operations across designated routes. The hydrogen will be sourced from multiple green hydrogen projects across South Wales.

Partners involved in HyHAUL alongside Protium include ReFuels, CNG Fuels, Scania, NRG Riverside and Reynolds Logistics. The trucks used will be provided by multiple OEMs, including EV Cargo and FSEW.
