Swaffham is now home to new bus shelters, featuring real-time information screens, environmentally friendly grass roofing and new cycle racks.
Having secured funding from the Department for Transport (DfT) to improve bus services throughout Norfolk, Norfolk County Council detailed how the advanced “eco-bus shelters” have replaced older stops in the town centre and form part of the council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan. Further stops across Norfolk will be upgraded to the new standard over the coming months, with Hunstanton next in line.
In Swaffham, the stops have been enhanced further as part of the Swaffham High Street Heritage Action Zone. This – a partnership project with Historic England and Breckland Council – is striving to make improvements to the Swaffham Marketplace and surrounding area, with three sculptural cycle stands and lighted bollards also to be installed. These will be situated by the approach to Swaffham’s churchyard and help to promote walking and cycling as sustainable forms of transport.
Paul Claussen, executive member for economic development and growth at Breckland Council, said: “The new eco-roofed, high-tech bus stops in Swaffham will not only encourage more people to use local transport but increase the amount of space for nature in the town centre. This will contribute to our commitments of promoting sustainable transport, cutting net carbon emissions, and supporting bees, insects and nature to flourish.”
