The Department for Transport has launched a new £2mn competition which will see the government investing in local authorities and businesses to develop green travel schemes.
Grants of up to £500,000 are available through the Transport Decarbonisation Demonstrators programme, which is set to run from 27 November until 8 January, backing UK businesses in running trials able to tackle local transport challenges. Half of the £2mn fund will be reserved for rural areas. This will look to help them unlock the benefits of technology and innovation to take on challenges such as access to jobs and reducing loneliness.
Mike Biddle, Executive Director for Net Zero at Innovate UK, which will be awarding and delivering grants, said: “Taking a place-based approach to decarbonise our transport systems is critical if we are to reach our net zero targets both locally and nationally and prosper from the transition to net zero.”
