Our Purpose and Scope

The changing climate is driving targets on emissions and energy. The need for an energy transition and new infrastructure is in little doubt. The way this infrastructure is being delivered, however, is something that has been called into question.

Ministers in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero have noted concerns around transparency, as well as the impact that these projects are having among local communities. That is why this group has been established and a campaign launched.

We are here to tell the story of the East of England’s energy transition. We will collaborate with communication leads from across industry, regulators and the government. We want to support developers as they work to progress their projects, engage with communities and minimise impacts. We want to help communities by involving them and engaging with them on this journey to net zero, ensuring they understand what is being done, why and can see the benefits. We also want to help develop the future workforce and supply chain.

We are made up of representatives from all of the major energy-related projects in the East of England, including Sizewell C and offshore wind farms and industry bodies.

Together, we will ensure the needs and perspectives of communities in the region are taken into account. That goes for communities impacted by this new infrastructure. It also goes for communities that stand to benefit from this new infrastructure. We will tell the story of the energy transition and set a benchmark for communication in future energy projects across the whole of the UK.

The Strategic Communications and Engagement Group brings together industry communication leads from projects with planned near-term network infrastructure projects across Suffolk, Norfolk, North Essex and West Cambridgeshire, with the Electricity System Operator, Ofgem and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

Key responsibilities include directly engaging with community action groups in East Anglia and nationally, as well as communicating and involving the wider East Anglian community in this transition to net zero, while engaging too with local MPs.

With representatives from all the major energy-related projects in the East of England, Net Zero East is working to tell the story of the energy transition and bring everyone along on the journey.
