Wood designing future grid and testing hydrogen feasibility

Wood has been appointed by National Gas to digitally upgrade Britain’s gas transmission system, and is also exploring the feasibility of hydrogen blending through a digital twin.

Under a five-year framework agreement, Wood will apply digital solutions across 7,600km of pipelines, compressor stations and terminal infrastructure. This will see National Gas infrastructure transformed to modern, cyber-secure technology, ensuring it is fit and sustainable for the future.

Wood is also delivering specialist hydrogen studies to National Gas on its National Transmission System (NTS)

It is using its industry-leading digital twin, Wood Virtuoso, to analyse the characteristics of blended hydrogen and natural gas. It will then advise on the level of investment needed to repurpose NTS infrastructure to transport hydrogen on 25% of its pipelines. Blending of up to 20% could see 6mn tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions saved every year.
