SSE and WMCA unveil “landmark energy collaboration agreement”

SSE Energy Solutions and the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) have unveiled a “landmark energy collaboration agreement”.

Having signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the pair will work together on new clean energy projects across the region. With WMCA and its local authority partners targeting net zero by 2041, the MoU will strengthen their efforts to explore region-wide opportunities and boost energy security.

The agreement follows in the footsteps of a partnership agreed by Coventry City Council and E.ON, which is centred around delivering energy projects across Coventry. These include solar energy for public buildings, electrification of transport, and improvements to the energy efficiency of homes and businesses.

Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands and WMCA Chair, said that this, along with E.ON’s link-up with Coventry City Council both sent a clear message that “the West Midlands is ready to collaborate with partners who can bring an array of experience, investment and insights.” Describing it as a “significant moment”, Street continued: “Reaching our net zero goals is mission critical. And to successfully achieve it was always going to rely on the public and the private sector working together.”
