Homeowners are set to be able to find it easier to install rooftop solar panels without facing costly planning delays after the government introduced new rules.
Changes made to permitted development rights rules mean more homeowners and businesses can now install solar panels on their rooftops without having to go through the planning system. The current way of doing things has led to those wanting to make installations face eight-week waits and additional costs.
Now, homes with flat roofs will no longer need planning permission to install solar panels, bringing rules in line with those for businesses. The government is also scrapping the requirement for businesses to apply for planning permission if solar panels will generate more than 1MW.
