bp has signed a licensing and engineering agreement with Johnson Matthey for its LCH technology for H2Teesside – bp’s proposed low carbon hydrogen facility.
The LCH technology sees a gas-heated reformer paired with an autothermal reformer, offering the lowest natural gas usage that is commercially available today, as well as the ability to capture up to 99% of carbon dioxide produced. This would see H2Teesside capable of delivering the lowest levelised cost of hydrogen and most carbon efficient technology that is available today for low carbon hydrogen production.
With industry in the Tees Valley responsible for 64% of total local CO2 emissions, in comparison to the 24% national average, H2Teesside will be key in powering and decarbonising local industry. It is set to be situated near North Sea natural gas, established pipe corridors and planned carbon capture transportation and storage infrastructure, leaving it perfectly placed to lead a low carbon transformation.
